Gateway port question

My laptop has vista and my camcorder is a bit older and Panasonic only carries drivers for XP, so im unable to get video off. I was told I should be able to pull it with a firewire cable, but I dont seem to see any firewire ports. Am I missing something or do they not come with one?
This is on a Gateway M6834, I tried googling it a few different ways, but didnt get any useful links... Thanks

You can get a firewire to usb adapter or an expresscard firewire adapter. What's the camera model?

Would I need to get some type of software for the computer to recoginze it if I went with an adapter or something???
Camera is a Panasonic PV-GS36 mini dv... Great camera for my snowmobile video's so I hate to have to go and upgrade it because of this...

Im abit confused, is it that update suppose to update the drivers for vista?

A lot of laptops have mini firewire ports (1394 ports). They are smaller than USB ports, rectangular, and have a notch thing at the bottom. See if you have one of those. You should be able to get a cable that converts the small port to a large one.
