If you are going to buy now get the 4870. Crysis loves nvidia cards, but for everything else ATI pwns. Also crossfire scales much better than sli so if you want to put to 4870s together later on then it will be a much more satisfying experience.

Pros of nvidia = better warranties, better support
Pros of ATi = uh... hmm, it was cheaper than the 260 at the time, crossfire with 2 monitors.
Go with whichever is cheaper would be my advice. If you plan on staying single card, it wont really matter.
