www.top500.org has a list of the 500 fastest supercomputers.

Earth Simulator is currently the fastest supercomputer, with over 5000 processors.

HP built the third fastest, and IBM the fourth.

yeah I remember seeing a little article on the japan supercomputer outbeating the IBM made one not too long ago, like within the year I think? not 100% sure, 40 teraflops, thassssawholelottafloppin

Just so I have some idea of how fast that computer in Japan is, could someone provide a quantative example? What I mean is, for example, "If the earth simulator computer in Japan takes <insert time> long to accomplish a task, an AMD 64 3000+ based computer can do it in <insert time>." I apologize for the trivial question.

yeah me too actually. I looked up what a teraflop is, but I don't understand how fast a flop - trillion floating-point operations is in correlation to a GHz ???
