Before you touch it make sure it hasn't been touched, the capacitors in there hold hundreds of volts for months

Nah, not for months. Maybe a week or two.

To drain them, you can just plug something in and hot-wire it and leave it there for a bit till the power is drained. Maybe a lightbulb or a small fan.
