I am having difficulties deciding if I should build my new computer with firewire ports or usb ports. I know a lot of products use usb connectivity pins, but I like having higher speed transfer rates, so there are some drawbacks for whichever port I decide to go with. Also, does anyone know where I can buy just firewire cables or usb cables? I'm planning on connecting a lot of things to my new computer so distance is also an issue in deciding which cables to buy. Your opinion is much appreciated.

usb is a "must have" port when buying a new computer. nowadays they should include at least 2 or even 4 ports and firewire is mainly used for transferring DV from your camcorder which i think should be obsolete because now there are usb support and also there are HDD and SD card based camcorders. I should say all motherboards have usb ports so if you really need a firewire port just buy a bracket that sells very cheap.

Yeah those firewire brackets are cheap as heck, just get one if you think it's important.
