some light scratches would help it, with a greater surface area for the thermal paste to attach to and dissipate the heat. id stick with the alcohol and coffee filter. its not that hard.
I thought the idea of lapping was to remove all scratches? The surface of the heatsink and processor heatsink would be perfectly smooth in an ideal world with no need for thermal paste (Which is only to fill the imperfections and is not as good as bare metal for conducting heat away)

Don't mean to high jack your thread but, does anyone have some suggestions on where to put an external fan? Like a regular small fan :]
 
Your casing usually have slots for those ready. If not then you would have to do some slight mod on your casing so you can fit them.
