Just recently my 250 gig external drive decided to fail. I tried a few things such as software etc, putting in the freezer, but nothing worked. It would make a clicking sound and rarely my computer would even detect it. As a last resort to recover the data I took it out of its enclosure and plugged in it as a regular sata drive. Now everything is working great with it. So my question is, will a new enclosure do the trick or should I just retire it to regular non external use?

Wow it's been a while since I've been here.

the clicking sound is usually bad...maybe it was the faulty circuits of the external enclosure at fault....if anything you can grab a cheap external case...I think $25? test to see...never know

A new enclosure might work, though to be safe it might be best just to back up the data to be sure , in case the drive fails.
