Is there alot of difference between the 4850 and the 8800gt?

The 8800GT folds faster, and stream proccesors from Nvidia cant be
compared to ATI cards. Nvida cards have less sp's, but they work harder.

The 8800GT came out December 07, so yes its an older card. Its still good though, can run
any game you throw at it well. The better value now for gaming only would be the 4850, but for folding/gaming an 8800 series card.

ATI shaders are more powerful then nvidia shaders, RV770 has 800/5 = 160SP @ 750mhz, and it beats out 192 Nvidia shaders @ 1GHZ. but ur right, they really can't be compared.

No, im not even referring to clock speeds.

If you look at the folding at home GPU application, which is shader intensive you will see what im talking about.

Thats why an 8800GT can fold twice as fast as an Hd3870, even though the Hd3870 has many more shaders. Basically the way it looks right now Nvidia's shaders seem to do more work clock for clock...similar to core 2 duo chips vs amd x2 chips.

perhaps the program is outdated or hasn't been updated for the HD4870 yet...a 600mhz celeron and a C2Q @ 3.0GHz plays starcraft at the same frames...

No, the program just came out.

Two possibilities:

1. Nvidias shader just work harder clock for clock
2. All of the shaders arent being utilized all the way

Theyre working on it as i write this. New clients keep coming out every couple weeks.

Thing is, the Nvidia cards run folding off CUDA...and ATI cards run off CAL/Brook.
