hi there, i am considering building a new system soon, thing is all the mobos i can find don't have SATA 1.5 connecters, and i have 3 sata 1.5 HDD's that i'd like to keep,(at least for now).

so my question is, is a sata 3.0 mobo backwards compatible w/ sata 1.5 HDD's?
i've heard some say yes, some no, and some say it depends on the chipset and/or south bridge.
thanx.

My understanding is that SATA is backwards compatible, meaning that SATA 1.5 will run on a motherboard that has SATA 3.0 only connectors. However, I believe it's worth the money to get the higher rate.

On the flip side, certain motherboards having only SATA 1.5 can run a SATA 3.0 HDD, but that depends on the jumper configuration and the south bridge chipset (as you mentioned previously).

I gleaned my information from this post:
