Why not go with the hd 4870? Seems silly not to.

hi would 2 x HD4870's in crossfire out perform 2 x GTX 260's in SLI.

But yes I'd take HD 4870's over GTX 260's because even though GTX 260's have Ageia support, and HD 4870's have Havok, with HD 4870's you can use a good Intel P35/P45/X38/X48 board over an nVidia chipset

I think any sane person would due to a cheaper price (isn't it $100 less?), better performance across the board with single gpu's, and better performance in crossfire. But hey, do what you want.
