Old Maxtor (now they're owned by SeaGate, so they should be a bit better now)

When were they bought out? the newest maxtor i used was 2-3 years ago and it was crap.

My motivation to post this thread is to get some opinions on LAPTOP brands that you guys prefer. I am going to college in a month or 2 and I need your preference on what you like, and what you think will fit college lifestyle. I am not planning to spend too much.

Thanks a bunch! (I have the Compaq T700 series and it is freaking hot! (as in temperature hot).)

for laptops i prefer

hp (there laptops aren't for gaming much but looks great, and have great media capabilities)

Toshiba isn't bad but hp is better.

Yeah, HP laptops are great, I love mine, even though the graphics aren't super awesome (8600M GS), Source games like Half Life 2 run near 60FPS at full settings. The screen is bright and colorful, great for video and TV (with ExpressCard tuner). Dell isn't bad either, but I definitely prefer HP.
