The video card I posted is backward compatible with the older PCI Express

Actually, not just the video card I posted but all PCI Express 2.0 video cards are backward compatible.

Your PSU is up to speed, but you're going to somewhat bottlenecked, I agree with Maroon about the 9600gt, its more powerful and not as much of a power sucker as the 8800gts 640mb

PCI-e 2.0 and x16 are backwards compatible like Maroon said

Stay away from the 8800GTS 640MB. The 640MB means it's an older g80 core card. A 8800GTS 512MB has the g92 core and is a much better card. Better than the 9600, but for the price the 9600 is a good card to get. 9600 is a g92 core as well.

Newegg.com - EVGA 640-P2-N829-AR GeForce 8800GTS SSC 640MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

Thats the card he was looking at, and the GTS G92 cards are now pricier than 9800gtx's (cheapest one is $190)

for $150 the 9600gt would the the best choice

I know, I was pointing out the difference between the G92 8800GTS and the g80 8800GTS(a lot of people are not aware of the core difference and think the 640 is better than the 512), but for the price of the g80 GTS (his original pick), the 9600 is a good card to get.

Well after looking at everything and your suggestions I went with

EVGA 512-P3-N875-AR GeForce 9800 GTX 738MHz SuperClock 512MB PCI Express x16 (2.0v) Video Card Retail

Got it for 199.99. I'll let you know the outcome
