does sli still have to be 2 identical cards? same model numbers and all?

makes it hard so that you need to buy both at once pretty much.

my buddy wants to sli his setup but cant find a 7800 gt that matches his.

Yes... they can be different manufacturers but at different clock speeds (but diff speeds aren't recommended, it scales closer to the lower clocked card)

They still have to be the same GPU

as vern said.. as long as they have the same amount of memory, and same core it is okay

core clock doesnt matter... both will fall to the slower card

i've had mismatched xfx 7900gt's... 1 was the superclocked, the other was standard... worked just fine

nope you can jerry rig the 3k and 4k series. don't know about the 2k series though. and the 1k series is only that card and its crossfire edition counterpart.

IE hd 3000 or 4000 series i take it. new to ati but the 4850 looks nice

man you guys r the bomb awnsering all my questions thanks

and to aid what was said earlier

the x1900 series use a crossfire dongle... excluding the x1950pro.. that was the very first ati card to use the crossfire bridge

ha. dongle..... yeah, and each card would be the base model, then the crossfire model would say Crossfire in the name and cost 150 bucks more.
