and yeah, you could get a ds3l, e21xx, 3850/3850, (mobo, cpu and gfx respectively) and a cheaper case and with the left over money get a monitor and decent set of headphones or speakers.
 
Well I was thinking for $600 that was a good deal, but if its $700 its not worth it
 
I'm leaning toward the first build. He sent me pics and it looks like it is brand new. Seems like a good kid that is trying to scrape money together for a new build of his own.

I build my own machines but am so busy that I don't have time to upgrade my machine let alone build one for my son. I really appreciate all the feedback.

I will be asking some questions when it's time for me to upgrade my amd system. I was thinking of going with a E8400 with intel mobo (with ddr3 1333 support), 9800gtx, and 2-4 Gigs of DDR3 1333 Mhz memory.. I'm in the very early stage of thinking about this though...
