This is my idea for a new gaming computer, all prices are in Australian dollars. I would really appreciate any comments because I'm not sure if all of the parts are fully compatible. All prices are in Australian dollars.

Thats good, but highly overkill in so many areas...

its all compatible, but are you accepting recommendations for changes?
 
Maybe he could drop the board to something like an Asus P5E or Maximus Formula and flash it to x48, and go to DDR2 instead (P5e or Maximus don't support DDR3)

possibly drop the e8500 to an e8400 or get a q6600 because both are cheaper

Power Supply is overkill: check out a PC Power and Cooling s610 or Corsair 650tx at MSY

maybe consider getting an eVGA or BFG 9800gx2 so that you can step up to the new GTX 280 or 260 when it comes out

You'll get about the same performance for a good lot cheaper
 
You see I'm actually making it for someone else. He asked me to design a $3500 gaming computer for him. I showed him the specifications above and he has happy with the power it provided. He wanted the following changes made...

1. Drop the Velociraptor and get a 32GB Solid State Disk. I wasn't sure if the advantages would be that great.

2. Up the Power Supply. He wanted a 1KW at least. He's a bit pig headed, even I knew that it was overkill.

3. He was also adamant that he wanted 4GB of DDR3 and a 9800GX2. Isn't the RAM a bit excessive?

From the above posts I gather that the same performance could be gotten for a lot less money. Can you please make suggestions as to where I can cut the price of a part and add it somewhere else to keep the price at $3500, and also suggest where the parts are overkill and they can be reduced/tweaked but keep the same performance?

Also, would a Q6600/6700 perform better than the E8500 for high end gaming (Crysis, etc.)?

Right now higher clocked Dual-Cores would outperform most Quad's except in UT3 or other Quad Intensive games, but over time, eventually games will be able to consume a Quad-Core
 
So would you recommend getting a quad core, will the slight disadvantage now be made up for in bigger advantages in the next 3-4 years.
 
Just wondering, do all computers run on 12 Volts? In Australia, our power supplies convert from 240V to 12V. Therefore the current running through the computer with a 500W PSU is 500/12 = 42.7amps. If American PSUs (for example) convert from 110V to 5.5V, then the PSU only needs to be 5*42.7 = 230W, if the computer is still to have 42.7 amps running through it.
