Measuring Computer Performance

I want an application that will provide a baseline by which I can judge, relatively speaking, how much faster one computer is over another. What are your suggestions?

try 3dmark06, it will test your gaming performance and provide you with a standardised score you can compare with every other pc in terms of gaming performance

for more standard day to day comparisons, try PCmark05

3Dmark has lost alot of respect for one main reason.

Can you say 2900Xt's? And many other ATI products, many 3Dmark scores award higher points to certain ATI cards and setups even though in actual real world benchmarks such as the crysis benchmark, many other cards beat the crap out of 3Dmark06 Champs.

For a long time the 3Dmark06 world record was on 2900Xt's (Or pros, I don't remember), but we know very well how many better cards there are.

I say the crysis benchmark more so than 3Dmark06.

But, again, it is all relative to what you use your computer for and if it is for gamming, which game you care most about.

I am a gamer, but this is for the work environment. Thanks for the PCmark05 suggestion. I'll give it a try!

no problem, have fun you could also try geekbench if you really want, that also provides a measure mainly of CPU performance
