planning to upgrade my graphic card, 9800gt is out of question - too expensive, so I am thinking to get 8800gt or 9600gt

1: why 8800GT is better than 9600GT? the Graphic processor is almost the same.

2: Is their really big difference between 512mb and 1gb video ram

3: my mobo is asus nvidia base, is it ok to use ATI graphic card?

1) the 8800GT has twice the stream processors...basically more raw power

2) No, 1gb is not needed and the 256bit memory interface on the 8800/9600 cards make it pointless anyway (not enough bandwidth to take advantage of all that memory)

3) Yes, you can use an ATI card or Nvidia card....doesn't matter on the chipset. It only matters if you plan on going with 2 cards in SLI or Crossfire.

All that is correct, also noteworthy is the fact that the 1gb can sometimes cause a Performance Drop on benchmarks

Not to hijack this thread.. but while these types of questions are being answered, how much better is the 8800gts G92($210) vs the 8800GT ($170)

Is the performance worth-while or minimal, is it really worth the $40 if I plan to run the card by itself in hopes of playing AoC in high settings?

Yeah, thats the one Im looking at :) So if you reccomend the G92 over the 8800GT, then ill get the G92. Thanks!

The 8800GT is a better card then the 9600GT, more power. 1GB wont do you much better, and for number 3 yes you can use ATI and here are some good ATI cards that are about the same as a 8800GT.

*EDIT*
There is a video on this page that benchmarks the 8800GT, 8800GTX and the radeon hd 3870, its about 1/4 of the way down.
