Standard laptop CPU temps

What is the standard temp for laptop cpu's to be running at? What is too high?

Well I got worried today since my laptop went up to 80C while playing games and 40C when im not playing

because of this im planning on selling the laptop and getting a new one

Mine runs ~60 when just idling (though I run Folding@Home, when it's truly idling it's usually 40-50). When gaming, it goes up to 70 or so. I did a test to see how well my laptop cooler improved CPU temps when running dual core stress test. Here's what I wrote down while it was running:

On desk:
Both CPU's past 71 deg C at 1:50
Both CPU's at 72 deg C at 2:00
Both CPU's at 73 deg C at 2:30
Both CPU's at 74 deg C at 2:40
Fan kicks up to high speed at 3:09
Both CPU's at 76 deg C at 3:20
Both CPU's at 77 deg C at 3:40
Both CPU's at 78 dec C at 4:05
Underneath desk feels slightly warm at 6:00
Core 1 hits 80 deg C at 7:05, 2 hits 80 at 7:20
both cores at 81 deg C at 7:35
Fan kicks up again at 7:55, both cores at 83
8:35, both cores hit 84 deg C
By 9:30, seem to level off at 83 deg (fan on high)

On cooler (cooler fans off):
CPU cooled to 50/50 before placed on cooler

Both cores at 60 C at 22 seconds
Fan increases at 33 seconds
Both cores at 65 C at 47 seconds

If you are concerned with laptop heat, I'd suggest buying a cooling pad. I have a Rosewill 7000W 17" dual-fan USB powered cooling pad that I tested in the text above. Other laptop coolers elevate the bottom of the laptop to allow more air to flow through bottom-mounted fan intake vents. The Rosewill cools the CPU very well, but hardly cools the GPU at all. This isn't good for gaming, but everything else is great. My GPU gets above 90 when gaming.

Right now my laptop idles around 53~55 but under a load it reaches just around 70 and sometimes passes that. So i think i might get a cooling pad. What is a dangerously high temp?

Yes, laptop CPU's are designed to stand higher temperatures since it is hard to fit adequate cooling into less than an inch thick of casing. The general safe temps for a laptop CPU is between 60-80C.

But isnt that also the temperatures that Desktop CPU shouldnt reach over 80C when it is overclocked
