I'm wondering if someone could give me a quick laundry list of a solid gaming build for the price range listed. I don't need monitor, keyboard, mouse, or speakers. Just case, hard drive, video card, cd-rom, psu, ram, motherboard, processor and cooling system.

By the way, the phrase "solid gaming build" simply means a machine that will run most games reasonably well.

Go to newegg.com and buy these

cPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
MOBO: GIGABYTE EP35 DS3R
Case: Antec 900 Mid Tower
HDD: Seagate 7200.11 320GB 16MB Cache
GPU: ECS 8800GTS 512MB G92
DVD Burner: ASUS 20X DVD+R SATA
PSU: Corsair 550VX
RAM: Crucial Ballistix Tracers 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 800
Heatsink: XIGMATEK HDT-S1283

Thank you very much for responding. However, even after all of the rebates have been factored in, of which there are more than $100 worth (and we all know how long it can take to get mail-in rebates back), the total of this build is over $900. This is a bit out of my price range.

How about this, change if you want:

MOBO: DS3L
HDD: 7200.10 250GB
GPU: cheapest 8800GT
DVD Burner: if your not going to burn stuff. go get a dvd-rom/cd-rom
PSU: Rosewill 550W

tell me if u are over ur budget

TC: ARCTIC COOLING MX-2 Thermal Compound $7

*Bold - with mail in rebate
Total before shipping and MIR and NO CASE $659

note- weak point probably be the CPU, look into quad core if your budget ( after picking out case/ including shipping) allows

Sorry, but I no longer think crucial tracers are a good idea anymore, with the infamous .8FE5 batch problems (google it), just not worth the hassle
and Vern, after some searching, yes even the Tracers are one sided now, not just regular ballastixs

edit- vid card also have lifetime warranty if you register the card

If he is on a budget, he might as well get the Arctic Freezer 7 Pro. It is the best bang for buck cpu cooler, has MX-2 compound already included, and will save him some more mulah. Also, why no one has mentioned the 9600GT is very odd seeing that the 9600GT will give him full settings on any game out there save Crysis and maybe Age of Conan. A good 9600GT will only cost $120 and the AF7 will only cost him $30 so right there he has saved $60 off of even your cheapest suggestions =)

I understand that he wants a solid gaming build, but for $800 or less, spending $200+ on graphics isn't really an option. Not to mention the 9600GT will be a great card for quite a while still. The 8800GTS may drop in price some in the future (after the newer cards are released), but until then I still think that any build under $900 shouldn't invest more than an 8800GT 512MB in graphics.
