Hmm, I'm not sure now which processor I should go with, the tri or quad.

I am planning on keeping this rig for a while, but will probably make small upgrades every few months.

Thoughts?

just get a Q6600 they can be easily overclocked and u will have it for a long time

well then i dont know the Q9300 and Q9450 are faster than the Q6600 at stock and cost like $100 extra so i would get a Q6600 and overclock it

Stick with a Q6600 on stock the Q9300 are more for the enthusiasts. a q6600 will handle games now and in the future well. on decent settings.

as for your case try not to get a mid tower if you can.... i've had bad experiences with mids. whats the most you have to spend on a case? or would like to spend. so i can get a general idea of what to recomend.

yeah the socket on the mobo and cpu have to match so you are right proto.

Id say get the board proto recommended but id say get an e8400 and upgrade in the future later on.
