Every tech site's forums are full of these but I want to know whats really about the GS/GT/GTS monikers that confuse people and which one of these should be the top contender in the "long run" in terms of heat/power/performance/ money

We have the 8800 GS Vs 8800 GT Vs 8800 GTS Vs 8800 Vs 8800 GTX Vs 8800 Ultra Vs 9600 GSO Vs 9600 GT Vs 9800 GTX Vs 9800 GX2.

The question is which of these should be the choice for someone who is on a budget to get the top performance on stock and which one would also perform well if overclocked.

8800gs- dominated for $120 and less range (same as 9600gso)
8800gt- you can get an open box one for $150 so don't consider the 9600gt
8800GTS- overclocked can outmatch the 8800Ultra and GTX
9800gtx- people who want a little better than a 8800gts g92 and it overclocks really well
9800gx2- For people who don't mind spending almost $600 on a card

So typically, the 8800 GTS almost equal to 9800 GTX in performance and is a better buy than the 9600 GT performance wise?

In which areas does the 9600Gt prove its worth other than price against the mighty 8800 GTS? any ideas?

yep pretty much

but the 9600gt does prove some worth when you put it in SLI Mode, nVidia finetuned their SLI ability, it scores almost as well as the 8800gt SLI FPS wise (80% increase over a single card)
