Don't bother getting another 256mb card

Save the money and get either 2 of those cheap ecs 8800gts's or 2 8800gt 512's either one will give you a nice performance improvement over the sli'd 256'ers

two 256mb cards does not mean you have 512mb of buffer memory total. Both cards are rendering the exact same scene so you are still limited to 256mb.

Also comparing the 8800GT 256mb to a 320mb 8800GTS isn't very accurate as the 8800GTS has both more memory and memory bandwidth.

The 8800gt's whoop it, both 256 and 512 versions, regardless of the 320mb mem/interface. 3dmark is hard proof. Its 256, but its still G92 regardless.

SLI performance should be better than two 8800gts 320mb's in SLI.

Anyways, ive made up my mind.

Here we go:

17,648 e8400 @ 3.93ghz 8800gt 256mb SLI
ORB - Compare

My system is the 10k score.

3dmark isnt hard proof. I'd like to see some benches of CoD4 @ 1680x1050 with maximum details, 16x AF and 8xAA.

Anyway, it sounds like you made up your mind before even starting the thread, so go for it.

Thats the thing, im not gonna do 8xAA/16xAF, i just want 4xAA/16xAF.

If it sucks, ill sell the cards.

Heres a system with an X2 @ 2.94 and 8800gt 256mb SLI
ORB - Compare

So i can expect close to 12k from my system...meh maybe this isnt such a good idea. I hate being stubborn!!

well here's 4xAA 16xAF with a single 8800GT 256mb, performance is about 30% lower than the 512mb version.

I mean you can go for it, I just don't see why you would choose a setup that will potentially be limited, rather than just going for something with more headroom.

Thats a stock 8800gt 256 i presume? I would be running two of them, both oc'd so that should make quite a difference.

Alright, im gonna look for a deal on 8800gt 512's...in the meanwhile ill still be considering another 256 card.

you can try it but like I said, you are limited by memory. You can overclock to 1ghz core and still see crap performance because you've run out of texture memory.

Here are some more benches illustrating this point, as you can see the 512mb version is about 76% faster than the 256mb. Almost 300% faster in Crysis @ 1680x1050 with some AA
