PC for Someone

Some one I know is looking to buy a new pc for the 1st time. They like to burn cd's and music with a little bit of gaming. Since they lack experience with computers I recommended some thing very basic. How's my aim I figured a reasonably functional pc with some moderate multimedia capabilities would be adequate. The person will be buying a 15-17in LCD monitor off me for $60
I think that's a pretty good deal. What do you think?

well the cpu is a little low even for a basic computer...also another gig of ram would be nice.

For that budget you could prob build a better system....or you could get a dell with better specs for the same price

Perhaps the clock speed is some what low but I specifically wanted something with xp pro, which is becoming harder to find. XP is reputedly faster, more organized, and less susceptible to viruses than vista. There are computers with similar specs that cost more and come with vista, which i feel would be more of a hassle since she really is inexperienced. it could be a worth wile investment with future upgrading.

I would get something like this:
eMachines - Desktop with AMD Athlonâ„¢ Dual-Core Processor BE-2350 - T5254
Better and cheaper.
Also there's this:
Gateway - Desktop with AMD Phenomâ„¢ Triple-Core Processor 8400 - GT5670
Thats if you don't mind pay a lot more.

Vista is the wave of the future now... XP is only slighty faster in gaming, and if anything Vista has a better firewall to protect you from the viruses.(Or stop watching porn completly and your comp will be even more safe).

They released Vista SP1 btw

Wow the e-machines seems pretty good although people usually have nothing good to say about them. I heard the mother boards don't last more than two years. But for the person buying it that might be just fine.

Either of the systems posted are fine, but since they do some gaming, a video card upgrade would be necessary. Good entry level cards can be had for a decent price...just depends on how much the person wants to spend, and what games and at what settings they play.

Viruses? Every time I hear that word it makes me laugh...

All of the "public" that knows nothing about computers that come into the local shop are all scared of viruses... Lol... I like to keep vista and XP the heck away from protecting itself.. I disable every protection feature they offer and just let AVG or Kaspersky do the work.. Even if there was a problem still.. It's not hard manually removing it...

I wouldn't worry about viruses... most of them are made by kids that think they know something about programming... Just build your own system.. or tell your friend or whomever your building this for to build his/her own system.. you'll get better performance that way. I would also get Vista... it offers and will offer far better things in the future... Especially for gaming.

(Or stop watching porn completly and your comp will be even more safe)

Hahaha.... that's like the one and only way you can get a virus... NEVER click the thing that says "Must update your Active-X control", lol...
