Well, its been quite some time since I've been aboard. So I figured I would try you all for something interesting.

My media center decided to stop booting last week and I've come to a stall.
Here's the facts:
Dell Precision 340
1GB RDRAM
2.4 Northwood
80GB system
320GB replacement
Vista Ultimate no sp1
No Ultimate Vista DVD

After the windows load screen I get a general BSoD and an immediate restart.
Ran chkdsk/f and fixed a boat load of errors. But in doing so the boot loader was corrupted (or just an important boot file) hence still no boot.
My first attempt was a straight partition copy with partition magic, but there were so many errors that all the backup sectors were used, therefore screwing up the tables.

Then I borrowed my grandmothers Home Premium dvd and tried a fixmbr and fixboot to no avail.
My last effort was to install home premium on the 320, and over-write every single file from ultimate to the new drive, leaving all the boot files intact.
But I find that the system files are read only and get access denied when trying to copy or cut, in or out of windows.

So here I stand with home premium on one drive and a busted ultimate on the other.
My goal here is to fix the ultimate and move it over to the 320.
My next move may be gparted via live CD but I'm ready for someone else's input.

Format and reinstall Vista Ultimate. It is corrupted.

get a bartpe cd to get your data, then reinstall and learn how to partition your drives so your docs are seperate
