I wanted to know if you guys think that my new laptop will perform at the level of my desktop, and about the deal itself.

GateWay 500XL: Purchased Oct 2002 for $2400

2.53GHZ Pentium 4
1024mb PC2700 Ram
120GB 5400RPM HD
Geforce 4 Ti 4200 128mb
DVD-RW and CD-RW
Windows XP Home
18" DVI LCD

This system screams with eveygame ive played, most recentally BattleField Vietnam.....Doom 3 should have no problems either.

HP ZX5000: Purchased Aug 2004 for $1700

3.0GHZ Pentium 4 Hyper Threading
1024mb SDRAM
60GB 5400RPM HD
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 128mb
DVD/CD-RW
Windows XP Home
15.4" WXGA

Specifically...are the graphics card perfomance levels comparable?

u might notice a drop wit the memory from switching from ddr ram to sdram but i cant say with the video cards find a site were they do benchmarking and look at the results.

I've got a 9600 pro and I'm getting ready to get a 9800 pro or something along those lines...but the 9600 pro does well with farcry and ut2k4, havent tried doom3 yet though...

You should expect to see the same performance, if not better from your new laptop.

I am not a big fan of laptops unless I have a power supply close by :)

Hmm are you sure its SDRam? It's pretty strange to find SDRam in computers/laptops these days, especially one of that level.

I didn't think DVD-RW's were out in 2002...

usually desktop graphic cards out preform laptops, but in this case your laptop should rule over your old desktop in graphics and overall preformance

Its a 1x Matshita DVD-RAM, it was like an extra $300, slow these days but it gets the job done
