I'm looking into upgrading my CPU for my work computer where I do some 3D work along with CAD. The chipset I have is "P965." The current CPU is an Intel Core 2 Duo 6400 @2.13 GHz. I REALLY want an E8400 or E8500. Is this possible without swapping out any other components?

So I've heard, but it's a work computer and I don't wanna be responsible for that catastrophe if it should happen. It's also an HP, so the BIOS is locked.

You need to contact HP and find out which newer processors are supported. The 965P chipset is fully capable of running the new 45nm processors like the e8400, e8500...but since it's a weird HP oem board you need to check first.

Also what aspect of autocad do you want a faster CPU for?

Definitely check with HP first. If they don't have a BIOS update for it, you would be wasting your money.
