You can. Or you can set it at 2048 for initial and 4096 for Max. That way it will use 2GB to start and if it needs more it can take it.

I thought it's not recommended to let the PF vary? That's what I was told, anyway.

Why? What is the purpose of setting it the same? Not even Windows does that and why not over 1.5GB? If you read the Windows documentation the page file should be almost double the amount of RAM you have.

I have used the Max with 3GB of RAM for the longest time now and NEVER come across any file access issues or anything at all. All my errors are generated by me hacking at the system.
