Yeah, so I just joined these forums. I was going to buy a Xbox 360, but I love FPS's so much I decided to build a gaming PC instead. PC's are better than consoles, imo, but they can cost more in the short run.
Anyway, I was/am hesitant about building a PC because I don't know how to overclock, configure RAM, and other things like that. I know a lot about computers compared to your average Joe, but not as much as you guys and gals.

Well, I already have a gaming PC but it's pretty low budget, and a friend built it for me a couple of years ago. I really want to be able to play games like CS, Americas Army, Half-life 2, Team Fortress 2, and such. I don't want to play on 3200x1200 pixels, but I'd like to be able to play with a very decent frame rate.

Alright, so I have a little over $900 to spend, but I'd like to save as much as possible when building my PC. If I could build a really nice PC for $800 or so, that'd be really good. I already have a nice mouse, an ok keyboard and a 19" moniter, so I just need to build the PC. (I'll upgrade my non-flat screen moniter later)

I think I want to go with AMD, but I'm not sure. As for the vid card, I don't know which I'd rather go for. Maybe GeForce?
So, could a PC building noob get some help? Any suggestions and help I can get on building my PC would be great!! =D
Thanks!

Hmmm. For these games listed you should be fine with a Geforce 9600GT which can be found for fairly cheap and are very good cards for their price - $150-170. A good and easy to overclock motherboard is the Gigabyte DS3L and is only about $90 I believe. What speed of CPU and RAM do you have so far? And are you going to be reusing any of the parts? (case/hard drive/psu, etc) Let me know what you have now and what your plans are. I'll give you some good suggestions for other parts.

Hmmm, I didn't even consider re-using any of my current parts.
I'll post what I have at the moment.
Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2200+
RAM: 256mb & 512mb (DDR PC3200)
Vid card: Radeon 9200 128mb (I'm pretty sure)
HD: Maxtor 6Y160P0
I need a new CD drive, mine is slightly damaged.
The 3R System AudiXP is a steel case that measures 200 x 430 x 480 mm. It has 3 5.25" drive bays, 5 3.5" drive bays (2 external, 3 internal), 1 80 mm rear fan, and 250W PSU.
I think that's the case I have.

I wasn't sure about some of my specs so I used Cpuz. I think it's all correct.
My current PC has no system disc. I downloaded a keygen a year and a half ago. (haha, I thought I was safe behind Norton) I got a virus that infects all the executable programs on your PC. The virus has messed up my registry and some programs which is one reason why I want to build a new PC. Everybody I talked to said I needed to reformat my PC because you cannot destroy the virus any other way. I don't have a system CD, so I can't do that. (I've learned my lesson about pirating software ;))

Whew, now that that's out in the open, I'm not sure if I can use my HD without infecting my new PC.

haha, so what do you think?

Edit: By the way, I don't really care about Halo 2 on the PC. I would like to play CoD4 and new FPS's though. Would it be possible to play Crysis on a PC in my $800-$900 budget?

*edit*
Wow, we all three had similar but still slightly different variations to the builds. If you use my build, you obviously have some room to go for a higher sized hard drive or even a Q6600 if you really want. Or better RAM. I think the $724 price mark is a good starting point for you to customize for yourself.

Solid steve you left out some things. Case, heatsink/fan, and optical drive.

Good build, but I think it would be better for him to pay an extra $10 for a q6600, and not get Arctic Silver 5 because of the MX-2/1 thermal pad already on the AF7

my mistake :p

i would have to agree with the Q6600 aswell sure its not a new 45nm chip but for $10 you can't go wrong, what else woul you use $10 on

FRYS.com | Intel

heres the link

maybe since he's only added $4 to the budget, he could get a Xigmatech Rifle ( I didn't recommend it before, because I thought you would cap out your budget)
