ok so i whent to my local hardware store today, and picked up soem sand paper.the grits i have are as follows
60
80
120
150
320
and finaly 400
is this any good for lapping, and do u think il be able to mirror finish with 400?

although i never lapped a heatsink i have much experiance in metal working 400grit will be fine anything finer would be a waste of time i would say wet and dry autobody paper would work great and get yourself a piece of plate glass

Yea you want to go much finer than that.

You can use anything below 400 until all the nickle plating is removed, then your going to want to go from 400 to 1000 then to 2000 and finish with 2500 or anything higher than 2000.

But just using ones up to 400 won't be the best of laps..

When I lapped my ihs and heatsink base I did:
320
1000
1500
2000

400 isnt really fine at all. 60 is rough as ****, and would just like destroy your heatsink. Get 800 or 1200 for finishing, do like 400 800 1200

whoa...that's some very rough stuff there. The minimum I would use 400 and up. Those coarser ones are enough to lap the scales off an alligator.

400 won't get you a mirror finish, but it will take off most of the base to reveal the copper beneath. You need around 1500-2500 to get a mirror finish.

well i was only at a rona whioch isnt the best of hard ware stores. il either order a kit off ebay or form the lapping website or il go and buy the suplies i need but thatls cost me a litle more.
