The other day I started my machine, and when it was "searching for boot record from IDE-0" it did not find anything. So I booted from the Windows startup disk, scandisk'ed, and ran sys. Now when I boot up, it finds the boot record, the Windows screen displays like normal -- but only for a couple seconds. Then I am sent to a C: prompt with no error message whatsoever. I've tried a couple of things, notably scanreg /restore, with no luck. It also will not let me go into safe mode, as holding Ctrl while booting up just goes to C: prompt also. Any suggestions?

Running Win98 SE on 350MHz, 128 meg RAM

Re install win98 over the top. Will solve your problem hopefully, if not then you have a faulty drive.

Boot from floppy, the try to install win98, if it lets you its fixed, if not then, new hard drive.

sounds like a normal dos loop. Just type this in Dos:

check in the autoexec.bat and see if this is in there first:

Dos=single, call c:\window\command.com and c:\windows\win.com /wx

if it is remove and try again. if not, do the following:

ren autoexec.bat autoexec.123 <enter>
ren config.sys config.123 <enter>

then reboot
