well i think it would make more sense in 3dmark to have higher clock speeds rather then higher memory just cause its a lower res and higher gRAM is really noticable on higher res stuff.
 
Funny how it performs less then the 512... whats the point in even making it?
It's a marketing gimmick. People who aren't as tech savvy, would be tricked into buying it because they think "ooo...wow...it's got 1GB of memory. Must be good."

why is the 8800GT 1GB below the 512, am I missing something here?

So the 512 out performs it?

The 8800GT has a 256-bit memory interface, which can't use that 1GB efficiently. You'd need like a 512-bit memory interface to effectively use 1GB.
 
^^ exactly, but turn on the AA (no not anti-air ;) Anti-aliasing), maybe crank the resolution up and the results change then
