Just wanting to know your views really. If you were planning a new gaming build, what you would choose to put alongside 4gb ram, and an 8800GTX? If I did build this it would be used for mainly gaming, and a little word processing (nothing too strenuous - listening to music etc).

Which is better for overclocking?

i would choose my q6600 like i did lol. the q6600 technically can over clcok more but the e8400 is at 3ghz llready and will go up to like 4. alltho i love my quad because of all the multi taskign i do alltho i only multitak o much now because of the quad i bought.

Defiantly go for the q6600. If you have an issue with paying a little more over the e8400 then get an 8800 gts g92 instead of the 8800 gtx. after you Overclock the 8800 gts g92 it basically IS an 8800 gtx.

2nded, 8800GTS 512MB for the win, G92 is newer tech than the 8800GTX

in terms of computer why pay more for older technology?
especially when GTS 512 performs at comparable level as the GTX
just don't make sense to me

Thanks for the fast replies. Money would'nt be the problem here, it would be approx an extra £10 - £20, which would be worth it.

A good point Invisible, this would be built to last, as I don't fancy upgrading the cpu/mobo/ram for at least 2 years after this build.

q6600 rocks. as does the 8800GTS....ALTHOUGH and now heres the rub...
If you game on a monitor smaller than 24" you would probably be better served getting a 9600GT.

Make sure you get a g0 revision q6600 if you plan to overclock. Oh and and a thermalright ultra 120 extreme :)

8800gtx and ultra are still king in high res gaming... i dunno maybe its just me.. but i've dabbed myself in 8800gt, 8800gts g92 and 2 different 8800gtx... and i would gladly pay the premium of 8800gtx... lovely card

Or if you're like me and bought a 8800gtx when they were king, The only worthwhile graphics upgrade is another 8800gtx....
