external hdd problem

hi all new here hope someone can help me.
i have a rocketfish 3.5 enclosure with a maxtor 80 gb hdd i have hook this up to three different comp. and get the same issue the comp. see it in device manager as usb mass storage but it want show up in my computer or disk manangement and also the computers want shutdown or startup when the enclosure is on.
i have searched all over and see this problem is posted everywhere but i have not fount a sullution.
if anyone can help with this please post. thanks in advance.

Have you tried setting the hard drive to 'master'?

i have tried everything and still cant get this to work,now the harddrive has black xp installed on it would that cause it from being recogonized?
any help please.
