I usually don't use more than 4X, even if I get good framerates at higher settings.

Exactly.
4X is more than enough to smooth jagged edges. That's what AA was made for.

6x narrow tent seems to have the best balance of performance and quality for me.

The amnt of AA you need is pretty subjective...and is also partly determined by your monitor size/pixel ratio. I would imagine 1680x1050 on a 20'' monitor would look pretty good with not too much AA.

I may splurge and get a gts 512 so i can spoil myself with loads of aa and af. i get good fps now, but i also plan on getting a phenom later, so id like to get up into the 14k range at least.

it depends. Like I said, the amount of AA you need is subjective. I would consider it overkill, also I'm sure it would really affect performance in a not so good way.

The higher your resolution the less likely you will need to use AA. Oh, you can still use it, but it probably won't look that much better on higher resolutions.

I always just though it was higher resolutions which made the need for AA less.

Or is there some perfect ratio, of screen size to resolution that makes it so?

16 to 9 or something like the golden ratio? Golden ratio is uber..
