i would personally go for the Q6600 n OC the sh!t out of it. No way would i spend over $300 on an quad-core just to get 20 more fps in gaming when i would be fine to get at least 60 fps.

I would certainly try to talk him out of a multi card setup..

And if he insists then for for crossfire X2.

I don't know, Most X38 just "look" cooler.. :p

I haven't read enough reviews on 780i's to really say.

he's gonna be playing on a 24" monitor...i dont think SLI is going to be pointless at that resolution.
the x38 does indeed look cool. but that XFX 780i looks pretty sick, too.
and i'm just not gonna use ATi cards. yes i know they scale (a little) better at high resolutions in crossfire. i just dont want to deal with the inevitable headache they will give me.
i dont know if i will go 9-series...if they are out, prolly so. anyone got a approximate release?
otherwise it will be 2 x 8800gts 512.

It's too bad games that do have support for sli don't take full advantage of it...

Oh well.

I mean, veed only got like 8-10 FPS increase in DX9 from sli, right? (crysis)

yeah but if you are starting out with 25 FPS then 10 is a substantial increase :)
company of heroes sli 8800GT almost doubles frame rate at 1900 x 1200
FEAR max 4aa 16af almost double as well
suprerme commander is like an 80% increase.

Supreme commander is awesome. I can waste hours.. On one game vs 4 AI HARDs teamed. Fun times..

single card is still best price/performence..
