i bought a belkin wireless G desktop PCI card to replace a crappy refurbed D-link one and the speeds keep going all over the place sometimes hanging at like 1-5Mbps, th eold card had barely any signal but always had 54Mbps, any reason for this crap speed on teh belkin?

Your Belkin may be working more than you think. The old DLink could of just not cared what the actual speed was for your connection and just displayed what the maximum possible speed was. If your signal is lower than max, don't expect to get 54Mbps out of it.

If it satisfies you, you can usually configure your card via the Device Manager to have a constant rate of 54Mbps, whether or not it needs to use that.

You do realise that the speed in Auto mode changes to faster or slower as and when it is required - it isn't going to be a significant issue.
