I have a Geforce fx5200 128mb and i do a lot of gaming. It run ok for some games but gets choppy on others such as Battlefield 1942 and black hawk down. I was wondering if it is time for need to get a bigger card? and if so what card?

If u have money, get nVidia 6800,

else ATi 9800 PRO (128MB Version)

I had used widest variety of cards, and I had this 5200FX once as well, I made a PC for some one with 100% same specifications. except I had 3000+ AMD and his was 2800+ AMD, and I put ATi 9800PRO 128MB in his.

but his PC turned to be faster than mine, not even in graphics, but Internet as wll. I said to myself, How come this be possible, everythign same, even his is slower than mine (200Mhz) and even I built both machines. then one Day I came to know the mystery behind, and that was the ATi card.

If you have extra money: Buy any of these:

nVidia 6800 Ultra/GT (not earlier series)
ATi 9800 XT 256MB (not X800)

else if not much budget, get:

ATi 9800 PRO 128MB (not 256MB)

be sure when buying ATi, it must be ATi Built (not third party)

I also ran a fx5200 for awhile playing bf1942(DC) and Battlefield Vietnam and it's not a great card for games like that. I upgraded to a Geforce FX5600XT and still wasn't impressed so I finally got the ATI 9800Pro and gameplay has been a dream since. Also if you plan on getting the new Doom3 when it comes out next month you should look at buying at minimum a 9800pro. It was benchmarked with the X800 and 6800 both did awesome but the 9800pro and 5900XT held up pretty good as well. (both 128 version).

get an nVidia fx 5200 card like i have, u can get it real cheap by clicking the link in my signiture below my system specs. its a 256MB card

Thank you for your help. I think im gonna look into gettin the 9800 pro cuz i was thinkin about gettin that one.

yeah in Nvidia turms XT is a bad thing thats why ur 5600XT ran just as bad as a 5200 because its basicly the same clock speed just wanted to clear that up

actually now that i think of it ill probably wait and buy either the nvidia 6800gt or the ati x800 when the prices go down a lil bit.

even in that case, i'll recommend nVidia, not ATI, unless until they came with someother card against 6800 (effective competition), just like Apple did it again in making the G5, so nVidia did it again in making the 6800.

yah ive heard a lot of good things about the 6800 so im pretty sure thatll be the next card i get
