my pentium IV 3.2C (northwood, hyperthreading) idles at 46c and peaks at 62 under load. is this safe?
how hot is too hot?

i remember reading that a p4 is critically hot at 80-90 and should peak at around 60 i believe

i am running same CPU (as u can see)
my idle is at 44, max at 55 (usig artic silver) and have a 80MM fan at back on 2200 rpm and a huge 120MM on my PSU.
else optimal air flow as I have removed a slot (CD/DVD case) in front
so air travels smoothly

i have northwood (prescott sucks)

yes with stock cooling it ran up to 70c in about 20 seconds under load. right now i am using an all copper heatsink with as-5, ive reinstalled the sink numerous times. i believe my video card is warming up the entire case, ive noticed a pattern in the temperatures between the case, the cpu, and video card [video card can get up to 70c and raise the cpu's idle temp by 5-6 degrees]. must go find a better card heatsink...
