Laptop will not boot windows. Put in a boot cd and just got a flashing cursor iin the top left corner of a black screen. What should I do?

the computer was restarted and now it just will not load windows
it is set to boot from a cd.
maybe the cd is bad? it flashes "invalid boot .ini booting from c:/windows/"

I am helping my sister over the phone. For some reason she has a desktop without a floppy drive so she can't just make a floppy boot so i had her download this utitlity from MS and burn it to a cd so that might be what is not working...
it is set to boot from a cd.

loadTOCNode(1, 'resolution');To resolve this issue, start the computer from the Windows XP CD, start the Recovery Console, and then use the Bootcfg.exe tool to rebuild the Boot.ini file. To do this, follow these steps: 1.Configure the computer to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. For information about how to do this, see your computer documentation, or contact your computer manufacturer.2.Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.3.When you receive the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM.4.When you receive the "Welcome to Setup" message, press R to start the Recovery Console.5.If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you have to use from the Recovery Console. 6.When you are prompted, type the administrator password, and then press ENTER.7.At the command prompt, type bootcfg /list, and then press ENTER. Is there a reliable download for creating a windows xp home boot cd? One did not come with the computer.

It is an HP.
Ok, usually there is a restore feature that re-images your hard drive back to factory settings. Which will delete everything on your drive. Not sure what function key it is, but go to HP's website, there will prolly be a live chat, if so launch it, give them your infor to the computer and have them walk u thru it or just do a search on their site on how to restore to factory settings

I am trying to avoid losing all the information since it is not my personal computer and she did not back anything up.
