Adding a HD 3870 to my HD 2900xt 1GB

38xx cards can run in CF and 29xx cards can run in CF.

ya but the 3870 uses the new gen crossfire, but the 2900 only uses the external dongle.

No, the 2900 uses the internal, 'SLi style' bridges, like many recent ATi cards, such as (X1650XT, X1950PRO, 2600)

Highly reccomended to get 2 of the same series, just like with Sli, otherwise performance will drop or it may not be compatable at all with some newer models and some of the older "first gen" crossfires.

2900xt isnt far in performance to the 3870..

but if anything, pick up a 2900pro, flash the bios to xt, and then go crossfire

and to everyone who said the 2900 uses the dongle... LOL at that.. they stopped the dongle w/ the x1950pro

ya if he wants to Crossfire it should be two of the same cards, but if you wanna save some cash, why not buy an hd2900pro and then Flash it into an hd2900xt
