What is a good stable/mild overclock on the 8800GTS 512 to run 24/7???
I'm currently at 670/972 (Stock Speed), feedback would be great!
What are you guys running for a stable/mild OC???

***EDIT***

Which version of ATITool are you guys using? The 0.26 or 0.27b4? I read that the 0.26 version is the last stable version...........

I run mine at 770 Core 996 Mem (Afraid to go higher than 996 every day because of the issues that came out with the 8800GT's memclocks and having them over 1000 would damage the memory over time, does anyone know if that issue was fixed with the 8800GTS?).

I -think- but i havent verified this yet, that it was an issue with the qimodo memory that was used on the GT cards, but i have still kept my GTS clocked under 1k memory for daily use.

I've hit 785 on mine using ATITool, 800MHz with initial drivers, but that extra overclock is cancelled out by poorer driver performance, so stick to a slightly lower clock with the new drivers. Keep the RAM at 1000MHz for daily use, and don't go past 1100MHz for benchmarking, and try for no more than an hour of usage when at those speeds. You might not get artifacts after 1100 in ATITool, but it'll crash anyway when you stress the card.

I have the XFX Alpha Dog Edition.

Thanx for the responses. What version of ATITool are you guys using? How many hours should I stress test to ensure my Overclock on the card? So I should be able to run 750/1000 24/7 without damaging the card? What about the shaders? What should I set that too?

In ATITool, the shader clock seems to be linked to the core clock, so once you increase core, the shader clock will also increase. Default is 1625, raising the core to 760 (which is a pretty safe number IMO) will get you shader clock to 1900.

I'm using version 0.26

Good luck!

Thx Merk,

I've decided to use Rivatuner instead, and I'm gonna try 750/1000 and test for artifacts with ATITool. Just one question, how long should I test with ATITool until it's safe to say it's stable?

I have to admit, I really don't do that much stress testing when I overclock the GPU, although I should :p

I just let the artifact scanner run for 30 seconds to see that it's somewhat runnable and then just shut it off and do some benching or play some games praying that it won't crash :D

Regardless of what you do, when your GPU crashes, it won't always simply shutdown the computer like a CPU crash from overclocking too far, sometimes your screen will just fill up with bright colors, or it might look like your screen just broke into multiple pieces. If this happens, I usually just power off the computer immediatley by pressing down on the power button for a few seconds.

I know ATI cards have a fail-safe component that has the card revert to stock settings if it ever crashes from overclocking, I don't think there is anything like this with Nvidia. But trust me, 750/1000 is extremely doable, and try it with ATITool, it's really much more straightforward IMO, although Rivatuner has more options, you probably won't use them.

I just use ntune to overclock, ATI tool hasnt worked right on my machine since i got the GTS and rivatuner for some reason wont let me overclock anymore.

Alright, I'm all set to OC my GPU now; after 3 hrs of reading and playing around with Rivatuner. I've adjusted my fans to certain GPU temps, and now I'm ready to OC!!!

But before I OC, just 1 more quick question. What temperature should I not exceed?

*** UPDATE ***

I'm running 750/1000 off Rivatuner, Love the Fan speed ajustments you can set on Rivatuner!!!

My old 3DMark06 score was 12,654 -------- New Score is 13,154 ----------> 500 pt. increase

That was nice, so I decided to run my Crysis Benchmark (Old Score was 44.41 fps) =)

49.635 FPS!!!

Temperature hit a high of 66C during 3DMark06 and Crysis Benchmarks.

Any feedback would be great (especially on the GPU temperature).
