Computer configuring question for college

tell us what u were actually goin to buy as a computer.. because if ur budget is only $800, im not so sure if u can afford the 64-bit CPU with a nice motherboard and a nice video card, and ur harddrive, cd drives, monitor... when it all adds up.. thatll be way above $800!! but id say with that budget ud want the AMD Athlon XP 3200+.. but again, post what u were planin on buy as a PC...

Well this computer is for college so mainly for writing papers but I also wanted to have the option for gaming. I can get the speakers and printer seperatly.

Needs: 512 memory,
P4 2.6- 2.8? or AMD 2600-3000?
A mobo with Lan, USB2, AGP 8x,
A nice video card
CD-RW rom and DVD rom
40 GB 7200rpm should be enough for me
Monitor!! this is the prob hard to fit it in the budget

Blue Pc guy, you forgot to put a video card down. He needs a good video card, and doesn't neccisarily need PC3200 RAM. PC2700 should be fine.

ur hardcore for that PC2700, everytime i say PC3200.. u have to say somethin about changin to PC2700... if he wants to, he can... but he wants it for some gaming to.. and PC3200 will be good.. cuz u only have 512MB of RAM, so go with the PC3200

He isn't a hardcore gamer, he is going to mainly be writing papers, and playing SOME games. He doesn't need PC3200. I'm trying to save Flash some money because he is a college student, and needs that money for other things.

Sounds good guys!!! I have a question on the mobo whats the difference between and 939 pin and 754 pin? Is one better than the other? On the 80gb hd whats the difference bettween a 133 and a 100? Forget the question on the pin # in mobo. The difference is price

i thought id break down the Motherboard/CPU thing anyways..lol.. the socket 754 is for AMD Athlon 64 2800+ to the 3400+ .... the socket 939 is for the AMD Athlon 64 3500+ and up... then the FX CPUs take socket 940
