vista does run best on 2 gigs on up though for what their doin 1 gig will work, would actually recomend XP instead its more reliable. the build you have should work, though I would recomend using either a gigabyte or ASUS board instead those boards i havent heard good reviews about quality from. avoid them and ECS at all costs. . .

If your folks are worried about the age of their components I'd strongly suggest buying a new hard drive. I personally wouldn't count on a 6 year old hard drive lasting much longer.
