no, there is no 3d performance. I had a 8500GT for a few days and even though I had a 100% overclock on it, it still couldn't really play anything...except for Quake 4 @ medium settings

My old Geforce 6600 plays Quake 4 and Prey at 1024x768 on high setting

8500GT should do better than that

Like I said, the 3850's are much better for 3d performance.

the 8500 GT's only have 16 shaders, at 900MHZ. Compared with the 8800 GTS's 96 at 1200MHZ, and the GT's 112 at 1500MHZ.

the 8800 GT will outperform a 3850, and it will outperform a 3870 by a small margin (single card vs single card)

But the 3850 and 3870 are still high performance cards, have UVD hardware for HD acceleration (which the 8800's lack), and they're relatively cheap (which makes them appealing for crossfire, especially since crossfire scales better than SLI), and don't consume much power.

So basically, the 3850's and 3870's are:
cheap, high performance, low power consumption cards, with full HD video acceleration.

I think 30FPS is very playable, and it seems that 8500GT at stock speeds can get 40FPS on average at 1280x1024 high quality

And still gets killed by a 7800 GTX, and beaten by an X1950 pro, which has roughly around the same performance of a 7800 GT

If he gets an 8500 GT, it will perform slower than his current 7800 GT.

That's a custom timedemo though, not with 20 players bouncing around shooting rockets everywhere.

Anyway, I think this is going a bit too far as we still don't really know what else he'll be doing aside from watching hd video

Thanks for all the replies guys
sorry i forgot to mention that i recently built a new computer and scrapped the 7800 gt into it. so now my videocard-less computer is sitting in my hallway. I probably won't be doing too much gaming, mainly i just want smooth playback and functionality on my 1080p tv
