Very bizarre DVD writer problem(s)...

Hi guys,

My PC has a pair of ASUS DRW-1608P3S internal DVD-R drives.

This morning, I discovered that they had both stopped working. When I inserted a disk into either of them, the respective disk light came on but... nothing. When I tried to Explore the drive, it appeared to be an empty volume even though there was definitely a valid disk in the drive.

I checked the cabling and there didn't appear to be any problems with either end of the power or data cables.

I tried installing the latest drivers, but no dice.

I tried using Device Manager to uninstall the devices and then rebooted. Windows detected the 'new' hardware, correctly identified it and... again, nothing.

After much messing about and a lot of amateur fumbling, I suddenly found that one drive began to work again... but only with games. Every game CD or DVD I tried worked perfectly - first time every time. However, it refused to recognise any music CD or data CD (e.g. photograph compilations and
backups of My Documents).

The other drive, however, remained resolutely silent. :(

All in all, it's very bizarre and perplexing problem. Any suggestions that anyone can pass my way would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
