First Time Building Computer check specs please

I am building my computer because of cost and I know I can get a better computer this way (with your help)

I plan to use this computer to load many DVD and MP3 on my computer as well as Burn.

I will play a computer game from time to time (I am an on and off gamer, but I like decent frames per sec. and other such things)

No overclocking

I want upgradeability for the future (keep costs down).

Please, if you see a place where I can save money tell me, or if you know something better

Question, if I want my processor to last/run better should I get higher Volt. And perhaps more fans or is what I have enough?

if you want upgradability socket 939 is for you

and if you really want to be set for 5+ years wait for a socket 939 board with PCI express to come out

the 939 processors are expensive (500$) but will be a stable socket for years and years to come.

I would be careful about getting too many fans. While some are necessary to keep the computer cool too many will be a noisy wreck. Otherwise things look good. Just be careful in the building process.

I will look at the socket 939, but how much better is it? it seems that my processor that i picked will have enough ability to handle more HD's and Ram and better motherboards when they come out... Or am i wrong in thinking that new better motherboards are coming out with my current socket?

Some have told me i need more ram? If so what kind and how much can my motherboard take? Is my Motherboard good for future expansion (i see that their are a few limitations to the memory, but i get the feeling their is more...)

512MB of ram is fine, you can always add more later

But the motherboard you have chosen will have a few more processors released for it before they switch entirely to socket 939.

And the 939 is a lot faster than your 2800+

if you decide to keep the 754 you should invest in at least a 3000+

Yes your right the Socket 939 is going to be for the long run... but i do not think i can take the 300 extra hit to the wallet... i would love a 939 socket (always have).

My socket though seems not to be bad for my needs (i am not going to being overclocking, but i will want to play some High need games)

Your right about moving up to a 3000+ it just does not make sense for me to get that cheap...

What motherB would you go for?

Thank you for the help, you have given me allot to consider, my problem is i just dont know what kind of power i will need in the future because i am just starting college, and dont really know what i will want my comp for (i TV tuner sounds nice though i can get that later) How much Power my buisness programs will need i dont know (though i feel they will require allot, plus i like to multiTask)

If you are not too concerned with upgradability the 3000+ or 3200+ socket 754's are both great. I would suggest the K8V Se Deluxe. And would also suggest you replace the CAS3 ram with CAS 2.5

that is a great example and this also leaves more room for upgrades because it only takes up 1 slot instead of 2 since you can't run dual channel anyways. All in all i think with this ram and a 3000 or 3200+ you are set.

I dont' think your business programs are gonna even make this computer breathe hard.

is what i am thinking about, but mybe i should go with two RAM with 256 to create more speed rather than having two RAM of 512 creating 1024.

What do you think and what do you mean i can't have double channel (you will have to forgive me, i am rather new at this)

well some motherboards/processors support dual channel mode on the ram

It effectively doubles the rate of data transfer but real world gains are between 5-15%

Socket 754 cannot support dual channel so don't worry about it unless you can shell out 650+$ for a 939 mobo/processor


2 sticks of that Geil ram you posted the link to will do wonderfully.


and at 168 dollars for a gig of CAS2.5 PC3200 ram is a steal

I paid over 300 for a gig of CAS 2.0 PC3200

You can get some motherboards that have a socket 939, but also support 754 processors. This may be a good idea for you if you want upgradeability in the future.
