Just from reading the words "giant bug", I'd guess it probably lived under water, where the water negates a lot of the gravity.

There was something on a BBC documentary about this, in the past the atmosphere was a lot more rich in oxygen that allowed incects to grow to a HUGE size, although I think that evolution played a huge part in down sizing of most insect verierties (which we can all be glad for) I just hope that Tarantulas get smaller. *Shudders*
