so does record mean what, how is it diff from rw. i thought rw standed for re writable...

Compy i think you mgiht be getting a few things confused. There is a difference in CDs that are marked R and RW. CD-RW are recordable disks that you can only write to and erase multiple times. That means when the disk reaches its capacity, you can erase whatever is on it and start over if you wish. CD-Rs however you can only record to and when it reaches its full capacity, that is it -- you cannot add more or erase the contents. CD-ROM disks are read only - you cannot modify or add its contents.

CD-RW drives can record data onto a CD only. In order to record data on to a DVD disk, you need a DVD-RW drive. Get it? Hope this helps.

i think windows media player 9 can read dvds . . .

WMP9 requires a seperate 3rd party DVD decoder to be installed, such as WinDVD, before it can read DVDs.

try inserting another DVD+R disk and then try DVD-R
