My husband's computer-Compaq XP-has now decided it will not load Windows--it just sits there doing a disc check over and over and over again--how to fix??

Doesnt it give the option to press a key to abort?

If it is stuck at disk checking, perhaps the disk has an error? That seems the obvious reason why it wouldn't pass a disk check. You can use something like a Linux LiveCD to try and recover data from your PC, then you can use the Windows CD or DVD to attempt recovery of Windows. If that fails, try reinstalling Windows, but be sure to get all of your files off of the drive using a LiveCD.

Reboot with Windows XP CD and press repair when asked. Choose the right oerating system (usually 1 "C:\WINDOWS") and enter the admin password (just [ENTER] if there is no password for admin). At the command prompt enter "chkdsk /r" and [ENTER].

If there's a problem with your disk it will be solved, even if it's bad blocks.

That is close but the thing is the first screen that comes up if you press "R" it brings up the Recovery Console. You have to go deeper into the install setup to get the repair option. ;)

copy that data to another drive. wipe that drive with zero's and then reformat it. then put the data back
