Im not sure if this is possible. My brother wants me to build him a PC that could play Crysis well with around £420.

He'll have a bit more cash in later months to upgrade anything that will need it.
Can someone do this?

Do not need included: OS, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, DVD drive or HD

Cheers in advance.

Slightly over budget because of stupid VAT...but this is quite a nice setup. This is assuming you will overclock of course...the cpu should do at least 3ghz most likely more.

Well, I had a go at scan and..

Case: Antec P182 (he really wants this case...)
CPU: Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2180
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
RAM: 2GB DDR2 Corsair TwinX 800Mhz
GPU: 256MB EVGA 8600GTS
PSU: 520W Corsair HX Series, Modular, ATX

Total: £425.24
A fiver over budget which is fine. At first it came to £400.01 with the E2140 and 667mhz RAM.

But with that graphics card and CPU.. would Crysis play on high 1280x1024?

Cheers Gurusan, but what website is that? >__>

I'd tell you to switch out that 8600GTS with an 8800GT, but I think the gap in prices in the UK are quite large? I'd consider an X1950PRO/GT instead of that GTS, might be a sliver cheaper too.

That's overclockers.co.uk

...and regarding your build...quite nice, but my thoughts:

Case: Antec P182 (he really wants this case...)
Very well, but that's eating a large chunk of his funds.

CPU: Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2180
Good choice as well, but the e2160 has been clocking just as well as the 2180 and might save you a few quid.

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
Great choice but I don't know if it's cheaper than the IP35-E, which is also a great board.

RAM: 2GB DDR2 Corsair TwinX 800Mhz
Personally, I'd choose the Geil ram over the Corsair...and the geil is quite cheap.

GPU: 256MB EVGA 8600GTS
DO NOT CHOOSE THIS IF YOU WANT TO RUN CRYSIS. :p

The 8600s are crap...they have a 128bit memory interface which severely cripples performance and I can't even imagine running Crysis on one of them.

Really, the 8800GT 512mb is the best for the money...if you want to save some then the 256mb 8800GT is about 20ish pounds cheaper but the extra memory in the 512mb version is really well worth the money....especially in a texture heavy game like Crysis as that destroys vram.

PSU: 520W Corsair HX Series, Modular, ATX
Great choice...

I put in a Power Colour (? I dont know this make, reliable?) X1950Pro in which made it £397

Next year he could buy the new 45mm Quads and a Geforce 9 series card. Its looking good.

Thanks again, Gurusan, ill have a look at overclockers and those parts.

Powercolor is fine...and the x1950 pro is a great GPU but it doesn't run crysis very well. My overclocked x1900GT is better than a x1950 pro and at all medium settings i get about 28-30fps on 1440x900...which to me is unplayable.

If you can afford the 8800GT I REALLY recommend it. It's in a completely different league...it would even completely destroy 2 x1950 pros in crossfire.

^ Yeah definitley get the 8800GT if you can afford it. But as far as choosing between an 8600GTS or an X1950PRO, I'd go for the PRO, however, I highly suggested, like gurusan, the 8800GT.

Great, looks like im we're going for Gurusan's first build. Brother says he will live without the P182 for a 8800GT alright :p

Thanks for the help, merk, Guru :)
